Two International Winter competitions for disabled sportsmen in Slovenia

In February Slovenia was hosting two championships for the disabled sportsmen. On Pohorje mountain in Eastern Slovenia Para-Alpine Championships was taking place and in Western Alpine region of our country on the Pokljuka Plateau - Para-Biathlon World Championships was organized.

Competitions in Para-Alpine skiing should have started already on 5th of February, just after the Grand Opening which took place on 4th of February. Sadly weather (too hot) as on many occasions in recent years was not cooperating and cause of safety reasons races in Alpine-Combined and speed disciplines (for both genders) for the disabled were cancelled. At the end 4 races in technical disciplines (slalom and giant-slalom for both women and men) took place from 8th - 11th of February. Slovenia had high expectations for the championships as their rpresentative Jernej Slivnik was one of the contenders for a medal in Giant-Slalom, but sadly got ill and was forced to watch the races from the "sidelines". At the end more than 130 competitors from more than 30 countries participated at the World Para-Alpine championships.

World Para-Biathlon championships was for the first time organized by International Biathlon Union. Before the International Paralympic comitee was in charge of these events and Slovenia is very proud that it was the organizer of first kind of this competition under the jurisdiction of International Biathlon Union. Sadly this year we did not have our own representatives, but we hosted almost 100 para-biathletes from 16 countries in Pokljuka. Competitors were competing in 3 disciplines in 3 categories (visualy imparied, sitting, walking para-biathletes) in the period from 3rd - 9th February 2025.
